Unique ‘Square Pulse’ Output

So, how is it possible to produce such a compact and portable device that is so powerful and cost-effective at the same time? The answer lies in the unique ‘square pulse output’ that is at the very heart of iPulse technology.

Constant Current = Constant Spectrum

All IPL devices function on the same principle: When a flash lamp produces the appropriate  wavelength spectrum output, that light is absorbed by the ‘target’ structures in the skin (like the hair shaft) and is converted into heat that creates the desired therapeutic effect (such as disabling hair re-growth). It is a basic law of physics that the spectrum output of a flash lamp varies as the current through the lamp changes. In conventional IPL systems, the current surges through the lamp like a wave, producing a rising, then falling, pattern of current (Figure 1). As a result, the spectrum output varies constantly throughout the pulse and, at the peak, the spectrum output is inappropriate for treatment and must be filtered out. Because much of the energy is wasted, treatments must be done at wastefully high energy levels.

 Figure 1

Square Pulse = Constant Spectrum

The iPulse system employs unique circuitry that creates a constant current (Figure 1). Throughout the duration of this ‘square’ pulse, only the optimum spectrum is produced, without variation. As a result, little energy is wasted. The iPulse system can operate at far lower energy levels, while eliminating the need for costly and cumbersome additional filters because only the desired spectrum output is produced and delivered to the skin.

Multiple Lamps = Increased Effective Output

The iPulse system employs a patented* multi-lamp array, consisting of two short, low voltage lamps that require less energy and less cooling—and which allows the use of a large (8.9 cm2), virtually square treatment head. In conventional IPL systems that employ a long lamp and, therefore, a long, rectangular treatment head, a significant amount of the energy emitted from the lamp is absorbed by the long sides of the glass block, never reaching the skin. We refer to this as ‘perimeter loss’. With two short lamps in the iPulse system, none of the light emitted between the two lamps is lost and the ratio of the sides to the total treatment head area is far lower than in conventional IPL systems, radically reducing perimeter loss.

Larger Spot Size = Deeper Penetration

Figure 2 demonstrates that the larger spot size is also far more effective in achieving depth of penetration than the same energy (per cm2) delivered in a small spot size. As a result, the iPulse system once again uses less energy to achieve greater treatment efficacy.

Easily Changeable Lamps

No need to return any part of the machine for replacement—the iPulseTM technology allows pre-calibrated lamp units to be incorporated in the product as shown (these can be easily changed by the operator in under a minute).

Small Unit Size

The base unit of the i200 product weighs only 23kg, making it portable within the salon environment. Its compact size allows it to fit neatly on to a mobile trolley or a standard desktop.

User-Friendly Interface

Adjustment of settings has been made simple so that little user time is wasted setting up for different clients. Simply select the program number appropriate to the client’s condition and skin type; the operator can then vary power levels within a prescribed band.

Ready to Use

Requiring no specialist installation, the i200 unit just plugs into a mains power supply and is ready to use immediately. No on-site calibration is needed for either the main unit or replacement lamps as these optical components are pre-set at the factory before despatch to the user. Lamp cartridges will remain within operating tolerances throughout their fixed shot-count lifetime before the computer advises that replacement is necessary.
